Consistently voted the best laserdisc ever released (prior to the movie's availability on DVD), the T2 Special Edition had everything a fan could want. The movie had 15 minutes of new footage added, the picture transfer was reference quality for the day, and the disc included an audio commentary and an exhaustive amount of supplemental material covering every aspect of the filmmaking process.

The box set went through several pressings, distinguished by the color of the logo on the front cover: silver, gold, blue, or red. The content inside was identical in all pressings. It was a classy black box, and a booklet was provided with a breakdown of all the new footage added to this longer cut of the movie.

Collectors will note that the laserdisc includes the Guns 'N Roses music video that was dropped from the "Ultimate Edition" DVD due to problems acquiring the music licensing rights.

The first pressing of 10000 has a silver foil T2 logo, most of the later pressings have a gold T2 label, and some of the last apparently have a blue foil logo. Other than the pressing runs, there is no difference in the Boxsets or contents.

Comes with a 6 pages unfolding insert, and a small paper titled "Some important notes about the T2 SE LD supplement".

This boxset is much too thick for holding just 3 discs and this insert, the inner box is about half empty. Overall this release looks cheap and incomplete, compared to the similar T2 SE Japanese release [PILF-1800] that, in the same size, holds not 3 but 4 discs, and a booklet of 44 pages!

Despite owning the 2015 blu-ray and the recent 4k release I find this superior for its picture. All DVDs, BDs and Ultra 4K have various issues especially noise reduction which is not inherent in this edition. Still amazing playback on my modern Sony OLED. Avoid the Ultra 4k version.

The last pressing run for this set was apparently in late 1996 or early '97 with the total run being 77000 copies issued over a three year period. The "Mint Marks sample" numbers changed a few times during the titles pressing run.

The original forecast sales figure was projected at 7000 copies with that figure including "held stock", the advanced orders were good at the time even given the $120 price tag. When it was released though it sold in much higher numbers than expected & fairly quickly the Pioneer US plant was pressing more copies to keep up with the demand. Over the period that the pressings were done the embossed foil colour on the front slipcase cover changed four times thru silver, gold, blue & red.

The first run (with the embossed silver coloured front) were numbered but not all of them & I cannot get the figure that they stopped numbering the sets at - I would assume it to be 7000 (perhaps lower?) but cannot confirm. The "silver" set I have is numbered T1075 on the inner slipcase with the "gold" & the "blue" sets carrying no numbers on the inner slipcase that holds the discs. I have not had any of the embossed metallic "red" versions which were the last copies issued pass through my hands but I can only assume they would carry no numbered inner slipcases. The final "red" release ran to 2000 copies apparently but I now cannot confirm the exact number though they are rather hard to find so perhaps the 2000 issued figure is accurate. The silver, gold & blue sets though are all easy to find.

All three US laserdisc releases of the 1993 Special Edition have a catalog/spine number based on "82997", for August 29, 1997, Judgment Day.
